Module summary

Continuing the iterative approach developed in a previous module the module extends the development stages of the design process to the prototyping and evaluation stages. Students will continue to apply the knowledge, skills and creativity that they acquired during Semesters 1 and 2. Students will finish their independent research project for a specialist area within contemporary practice. Students create independent design solutions that are supported by research with participants.

Objectives

Through integrating research and practice, this module gives students the opportunity to:
- Develop and complete a specialist design project
- Evaluate design outputs (prototypes) through assessing them with suitable participants to achieve the most effective user-centred design solutions.
- Develop skills for effectively communicating the interplay of research and practice in human-centred design.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Devise design solutions for suitable users and contexts using appropriate conceptual, practical and research tools and methods to create design prototypes.
2. Evaluate and defend user-centred design solutions through appropriate research methods
3. Accurately and critically report and reflect on the planning, execution, and evaluation of the project.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. Prototype a professional design project incorporating appropriate materials or technologies. 5. Apply creative problem-solving skills to the realisation of a design project that considers contextual factors.6. Build professional communication skills required to critically present integrated research and practice.
