This module introduces theories and principles of Colour Design and discusses how they can be used to create the most effective human-centred design solutions within the context of Graphic and Communication Design. Colour has both the ability to convey information clearly and to emotionally engage users with products, services and environments. The module content will be aligned with the principles of The Colour Literacy Project. The Colour Literacy Project is a 21st century initiative that recognises colour as a meta-discipline. Its mission is to provide state-of-the-art educational resources that strengthen the bridges between the sciences, arts, design and humanities in order to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future. Fluency with the language of colour sharpens our visual intelligence, expands our perceptions, and enhances our ability to communicate.
This module gives students the opportunity to:
Learn theoretical and practical perspectives Colour Design.
Explore the inter-disciplinary nature of Colour Design in a variety of contexts – healthcare, education, business, public sector, etc.
Address the specific needs and motivations of Colour Design users by developing creative and effective design solutions.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Analyse and interpret current challenges, theories and principles of Colour Design in order to define a problem or need.
2. Access and critically analyse literature, and plan appropriate research methods for the successful development of a design project.
3. Design and develop effective and visually stimulating design solutions in response to a specific brief, problem and need.
4. Contribute to the implementation and execution of a project to a professional and commercial standard.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Evaluate and use appropriate and relevant information to strengthen the quality of their work and their responses to various visual communication problems.

Student progress will be monitored through:
· Regular attendance at lectures and practical classes (absences dealt with through the normal School channels).
· Participation in lectures and practical classes.
· Feedback will be given in practicals.
· Formal presentation of work with feedback around week 8 (with feedback from industry/stakeholders if a live brief).
