This module connects students with architectural debates within the global historical, cultural context. Students acquire a deeper critical comprehension of the interplay between design practice and theoretical literature. Drawing upon examples of architectural discourses from around the world, it allows students to articulate theoretical and conceptual design ideas critically.
This module aims to explore the dynamic and dialectical relationships among architecture, culture, place, modernity, social structure, material culture, and human practice and agency, drawing on a range of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives.
1. Develop knowledge and understanding of architecture through pursuit of specific research in architecture or a related area such as urban design, interior design or landscape architecture.
2. Develop analytical and intellectual skills through research in an appropriate topic.
3. Define and articulate problems, develop ideas and effectively communicate these through conducting independent research and design.
4. Demonstrate independent judgment, autonomy and address complex issues in professional or related architectural environments.
5. Develop skills and specialism in an expert area related to architecture and urban contexts.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts of culture, society and tradition and their dynamic relationship to architecture and the use of space
2. Develop an understanding of the various ways in which architecture can and has been incorporated into contemporary design
3. Create a holistic architectural design proposal according to the vision, purpose, contextual research, spatial and end user requirements embedding innovative design ideas and technologies
4. Develop advanced skills in articulating design ideas and proposals through diverse mediums, such as oral, visual and written work
5. Critically reflect on design decisions and their broader impact on society and the environment with clarity, coherence, and critical insight, demonstrating professional communication, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and ethical awareness
6. Exhibit a clear understanding of one's suitable professional pathway, strategic planning and application

Discussions and oral formative feedback on the coursework will be provided during weekly studio tutorials (12 x 3 hour sessions), as opportunities to improve the work. Additional formative feedback will be provided during the interim and final reviews.
