Module summary

Placements in Context is a collaborative project module where you will work in partnership with external cultural organisations to respond to project briefs devised through dialogue between module staff and cultural sector partners. You are supported to situate your practical experience of your project within wider policy, funding and organisational contexts. Critical reflection around your practical project will help you to identify your professional career development aims and objectives.

Objectives

On this module, students will develop approaches to cultural sector professional practice via placement project work in partnership with external cultural sector organisations. Insights will be presented from numerous perspectives across a broad range of sectoral experiences and roles, encouraging students to critically reflect on sectoral organisational, funding and policy contexts. Lectures and seminar delivery will explore a range of wider contexts for cultural sector work, including developing student approaches to their own career development via critical self-reflexivity.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the ability to:
1. Respond creatively to a subject specific project brief and utilise research and analytical skills to manage the work required by the project.
2. Document and critically reflect on your engagement with the project and present it successfully utilising a variety of methods.
3. Situate the project within wider cultural sector organisational, funding and policy contexts.
4. Reflect critically on your professional development, identifying key strengths, skills and areas for improvement.

Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Team Working/Collaboration: The ability to build positive relationships with other people which then enables successful projects or other collaborations.
6. Personal/self/career management: The ability to manage self and be self-reliant. The ability to work independently, and on own initiative. Awareness of own strengths and development needs and the need for ongoing learning and proactive continuing professional development. Ability to set and achieve goals, and to seek/accept feedback. The ability to actively navigate career and networking opportunities.
