Module summary

Artist commissions in museums and heritage spaces are a significant form of interpretive practice in the contemporary visitor 'offer' at many museums and heritage sites. However, the role of artists within heritage interpretation needs critical attention to understand the benefits and challenges implicit within this practice. Through an examination of significant organizations and case studies, you will critically engage with artworks and sites in order to develop a commissioning 'artist's brief' applicable to a selected heritage site.

Objectives

This module will:
Enable you to critically examine the recent development and current practice of contemporary art interventions in heritage spaces. Introduce you to a range of case studies, both UK and internationally.
Encourage you to examine ways in which this practice both supports and challenges the conceptual underpinning of heritage sites. Provide opportunities for you to explore the creative practice of artists who are engaged with heritage interpretation.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Analyse the current policy and complex practice of employing artists within heritage sites.
2. Locate this practice in its recent historical context.
3. Recognise how artistic practice can inform heritage interpretation.
4. Prepare a ‘brief’ for a contemporary art commission at a heritage site.

5. Creativity: the ability to generate ideas, demonstrate originality and imaginative thinking.
6. Communication: the ability to (both within verbal and written communication) be clear, concise, and focussed; being able to tailor your message appropriately.
