This module is not approved as an Elective
The MA dissertation supports and enables you to make an original and valuable contribution to knowledge and understanding of an aspect of your programme of study. This is achieved through the development of independent research, critical, theoretical and reflective skills relevant to the disciplines addressed by your MA programme and field of study.
Within this module, you are supported to develop programme-specific research skills to identify a relevant area of independent investigation, locate and interpret suitable source materials, collate and analyse evidence, and present research coherently within appropriate academic styles and conventions. A mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials will support the development of these academic skills.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Identify and discuss a defined area of research
2. Distinguish, appraise and implement critically relevant methods, methodologies and resources
3. Formulate and clarify reasoned analysis, academic writing and research in the context of your field of study
4. Assemble the skills and resources necessary to undertake further discipline specific research or professional practice.
Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Critical Thinking: The ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.
6. Academic Language: The ability to use the oral, written, auditory, and visual language proficiency needed to be able to learn effectively and demonstrate understanding.

Formative feedback will be provided via attendance at and participation in lectures, seminars, workshops, and supervisions. Students receive feedback on their dissertation proposals and then develop thinking via the one-to-one relationship of the supervisory process.
