When you study “Jewish Museums and the Display of Cultural Difference”, you confront question about how minority museums constitute and present their own existence within a majority. You will study the interconnections between a society’s values (such as “equality”, “human rights”, “family values”) and prejudices (stereotypes, hierarchies) and museum display.
This module aims to develop your understanding of the ways in which major developments in museum culture have impacted on the study of the architectural and material culture of Jewish minorities in Europe.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Analyse the historical reasons for the omission of Jewish culture from many mainstream art museums
2. Discuss the particularities of the diverse models adopted for Jewish museums and Jewish exhibits in ethnographic and local history museums worldwide;
3. Reflect on the historical class topics in relation to current social issues, such as stereotyping/prejudice, migration, and minorities/community cohesion.
4. Research Jewish museums and material culture in relation to relevant literature and concepts
