Module summary

This module covers many aspects of tachyarrhythmia management with the primary focus on cardiac devices, pharmacology and electrophysiology. This module is particularly relevant to practising health professionals who are involved in caring for patients with tachyarrhythmias and heart failure. Topics covered include electrophysiology and haemodynamics; electrophysiology studies; ICD Implant and follow up indications; contraindications; procedures; troubleshooting; DVLA regulations; MHRA; and ethics.

Objectives

This module will provide students with insight and knowledge of tachycardiac arrhythmia management, covering topics such as cardiac device implantation and follow up, pharmacological management and electrophysiological assessment and treatment. The learning activities enable students to develop knowledge across a range of cardiac conditions and apply this to relevant scenarios for their own professional practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Critically evaluate the prevalence, aetiology and symptoms of patients with tachycardia related conditions for the purpose of identifying appropriate application of anti-arrhythmic therapy in a wide range of pathologies and apply this to advanced practice
2. Evaluate and discuss the principles and application of advanced rhythm management tools in a range of pathologies and apply to advanced practice
3. Evaluate current issues pertaining to clinical practice demonstrating a recognition and awareness of patients’ needs both physically and psychologically, providing appropriate support for the provision of high-quality patient care
4. Critically appraise the role of anti-arrhythmic therapies in the management of patients with a cardiac condition
5. Critically appraise current literature/research studies for advanced rhythm management techniques, incorporating evidence-based practice and apply this to advanced practice

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Demonstrate critical thinking evidencing the ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.  
2. Demonstrate verbal presentation skills evidencing the ability to communicate on a pre-prepared topic in an accessible manner, considering the needs of the specific audience. Utilizing appropriate audio and visual aids.  
3. Demonstrate the ability to plan and utilise resources through prioritisation organisation and management.

Syllabus

Topics will include:

- Pharmacological management of for tachycardia rhythm management
- Cardiac Device utilisation, implant, follow up and trouble shooting in the management of tachycardias.
- Use of electrophysiology studies and catheter ablation of the treatment of tachy arrhythmias.
- Ethical and legal frameworks associated with tachyarrhythmia management
- End of Life management in patients with cardiac devices.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress during this module will be monitored through formative MCQ's and tasks set each block week available through Minerva, answers will be provided 3 weeks after date set. Formative group presentations will be used to monitor understanding of key concepts required for the assessment, and facilitate progress towards the summative assessment.
