Learning outcomes

Subject Specific Learning Outcomes

1. Design, plan and execute a significant independent research project in the field of journalism and/or media and communication studies.
2. Select a suitable research methodology (including practice led research if appropriate) and engage critically with relevant research and evidence.
3. Demonstrate awareness of and adherence to the principles of journalistic and research ethics.
4. Apply journalistic skills and knowledge to work in a news media environment.

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Research Skills: Devise and execute a research-led project, select appropriate research methodologies, organise, and manage resources and adhere to ethical and professional principles.
2. Technical Skills: The production of professional standard news content, for a variety of audiences and media.
3. Communication skills: Presentation skills including the communication of a substantial piece of independent research
4. Personal skills: Ability to exercise initiative and take personal responsibility. Time management skills and working to deadline. Working in different roles within a team, including team leadership. The deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations.

Assessment

Achievement is aligned to the learning outcomes of each module, so students will be assessed through a variety of methods dependent on the module and the level of the programme. At level 3 this will include a double-weighted independent project (either research or practice-based), but may also include research essays, reflective critiques, presentations or portfolio work.
