Learning outcomes

Subject Specific Learning Outcomes

1. Describe how the practice and study of journalism relates to politics and society and make an informed contribution to these debates
2. Critically engage with a range of news media content to develop your news literacy skills
3. Explain and adhere to basic principles of media law, regulation and ethics.
4. Demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, practical competencies and techniques of journalism by producing basic news content using audio, video and text.

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Research Skills: The ability to locate, engage with, critically analyse and key texts and ideas in the study of journalism.
2. Technical Skills: Proficiency in a range of basic journalism production practices, for example, recording audio, filming video and writing news copy.
3. Communication Skills: The ability to adapt your communication style and medium for different audiences, including essay writing, reflective work and journalistic output.
4. Personal skills: Organisational skills, delivery to a deadline, punctuality, teamwork, awareness of the importance of professional ethics

Assessment

Achievement is aligned to the learning outcomes of each module, so students will be assessed through a variety of methods dependent on the module and the level of the programme. At level 1 they may include portfolios of research, essays, portfolios of practical work in audio, video and digital formats, reflective pieces and exams.
