This module provides you with an introduction to the academic and practise-based study of design and creative thinking. The module will teach you key perspectives and approaches to studying design and creative thinking and demonstrate how these can be used to understand and analyse contemporary issues and examples in your subject specialism. This knowledge will inform creative outcomes and solutions for your chosen discipline. At the same time, the module will encourage you to apply the knowledge of academic study skills in the study of design and creative thinking.
The aim of the module is to provide the students with an understanding and appreciation of the fundamental concepts and principles of design thinking and practise, creativity from a broad perspective. This knowledge will underpin further investigation into a chosen design specialism. Seminars and lectures will discuss accepted historical and emerging contemporary issues in design and the creative industries, enabling students to develop a considered creative solution to a contemporary issue in their discipline. Successful completion of the module will ensure that students are well prepared to join their selected BA (Hons) programme in Design.
1. Demonstrate academic skills and knowledge in design and creative thinking required for study at undergraduate level
2. Apply academic skills and knowledge to understand and critically analyse important contemporary issues in design and the creative industries
3. Demonstrate knowledge of problem-solving approaches used in design specialisms and show a critical approach to practice-based enquiry.
4. Knowledge and application of traditional and digital tools and processes used to communicate creative concepts and outcomes.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of teamwork in forming design solutions
6. Develop a reflective practise
Taught sessions will introduce design and creative thinking from theoretical and practise-based perspectives. The role of design thinking in different subject specialisms will be explored though cross disciplinary and subject specific research, analysis and problem solving. Indicative syllabus may include design thinking, creative problem solving, design solutions, visual communications, digital design, and future thinking.

There will be opportunity for formative feedback at defined points in the module through group tutorials, where students will be encouraged to share ideas and work in progress. Formative feedback will also be provided through contribution to class discussions in lectures and seminars, and in the specialist tutorials.
