Module summary

This module will introduce students to major theoretical approaches in translation and interpreting studies and methods in the practice of translation and interpreting. It will provide students with a toolkit of ideas for engaging in and reflecting on practice and, more broadly, for thinking about translating and interpreting on the conceptual level.

Objectives

The module is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in translation and interpreting studies and nuanced understanding of key methods in translation and interpreting. It will provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to apply theoretical concepts to their translation practice and improve their translation outputs and performance ; to understand, evaluate, and choose appropriate translation strategies and methods, and to be able to justify the choices made to others while supporting them through theory-informed evidence; to approach translation tasks with a theoretically informed understanding of the complexities involved.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Apply major theoretical ideas in translation and interpreting studies in analysis of your own and others’ translations

2. Identify contextually appropriate translation strategies and approaches on the basis of textual analysis

3. Evaluate major theoretical traditions in translation and interpreting studies

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback is provided at the nine seminars each taking place weekly and aimed at applications, exemplifications and discussions of the theories introduced in the lecture of the same week, addressing one major thematic area within translation and interpreting studies. The students are split into small groups for these sessions to enable dialogue between students and tutors.
