Module summary

This module explores the use of software tools including the use of Computer Aided Design and Comsol Multiphysics for modelling complex problems in relation to different food problems – e.g., heat and mass transfer and fluid flow. The module provides the necessary skills and knowledge to mathematically model typical heat transfer problems in food processing.

Objectives

To introduce principles underlying the analysis of food processing operations and their application to process and product design. This module will use software to build models which can be used to simulate heat transfer in real systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will:

1. Be able to explain the application of mathematical modelling of real problems in food processing.
2. Prepared a technical report describing a physical heat transfer problem or similar system and the associated mathematical model and present the model results.

3. Created and solved a mathematical model of a real heating problem

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

4. Work ready- technical skills through enhanced numeracy and mathematical modelling and become familiar with advanced modelling software Comsol Multiphysics including the computer aided design elements

5. Problem solving skills

6. Writing skills in the form of a technical report

Syllabus

* Overview of steady state heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation.

* Review unsteady state heat transfer equations.

* Become familiarised with Comsol Multiphysics software and be able to build steady and unsteady state models of food processing systems.

* Interactively develop a mathematical model of a real heat transfer problem.
