This module will be relevant to language teachers and teacher educators interested in reviewing and developing their understandings of key issues in the learning and teaching of second language grammar. It starts by considering different means of the term 'grammar' and providing an overview of key issues in the study of grammar teaching. Arguments in favour of and against formal grammar teaching are then presented and discussed.
On completion of this module, you will have a systematic understanding and critical awareness of:
1- different definitions of 'grammar';
2- the role of grammatical knowledge in language proficiency;
3- the role of grammar in different approaches to language teaching;
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Define and explain the different conceptualizations of 'grammar' within the context of second language acquisition, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of key terms and debates in the field.
2. Critically evaluate the main arguments for and against formal grammar instruction, using evidence from recent research studies to support positions and discussions.
3. Analyse and synthesize second language acquisition research and teacher cognition studies to inform and justify pedagogical decisions in grammar teaching.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. The ability to recognize and express knowledge and understanding and how it relates to personal experience and to demonstrate learning and growth from the experience.
2. The ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.
